El impacto del Concilio Vaticano II en la historiografía sobre el catolicismo en Estados Unidos

Abstract

El artículo analiza el impacto del Concilio Vaticano II en la historiografía sobre el catolicismo americano, siguiendo, de modo cronológico, la evolución de temas y paradigmas, antes y después del Concilio, y entre la generación que vivió el Concilio y la sucesiva. Se ha podido relevar un fuerte impacto del Concilio en el ámbito historiográfico, como fuerte fue el impacto del Concilio en el catolicismo americano. La eclesiología del Pueblo de Dios, así como el nuevo clima ecuménico posconciliar parecen haber sido los elementos de mayor influjo. En un primer momento, el Concilio y sus interpretaciones contribuyeron a que la tradicional Historia de la Iglesia se abriera a las nuevas corrientes de la historia social y cultural, colocando el catolicismo bajo el dominio de la «historia religiosa». El impacto del Concilio, en las últimas décadas, se podría rastrear, directa o indirectamente, en las siguientes tendencias: 1. El descubrimiento de la «continuidad»; 2. Del paradigma de la «singularidad» al de la «diferencia»; 3. Un catolicismo menos «americanizado» y más «global»; 4. La necesidad de una «historia religiosa» más religiosa; y 5. Hacia una nueva lectura de la historia de los Estados Unidos.

Abstract: The article analyzes the impact of Vatican II on the historiography of American Catholicism following chronologically the evolution of topics and paradigms before and after the Council, and from the generation that lived during the Council as well as to the one following it. It is possible to verify the strong impact that the Council had on the historiographical field, as strong was the impact of the Council on American Catholicism. The ecclesiology of the Church as the People of God and the new postconciliar ecumenical climate appear to have been the factors with the greatest influence. In a first moment, the Council and its interpretations contributed to open the traditional history of the Church to the new currents of social and cultural history, yielding the way to «religious history». In recent decades the impact of the Council could be noted, directly or indirectly, in the following trends: 1. The discovery of «continuity»; 2. From the paradigm of «uniqueness» to the one of «difference»; 3. A Catholicism less «Americanized» and more «global»; 4. The need for a more religious «religious history»; and 5. Towards a new reading of the history of the United States.
