«Questo immane suicidio dell’umanità». Giovanni Battista Montini e la prima Guerra Mondiale

Abstract

Although the young Giovanni Battista Montini was not called up, he experienced the First World War through frequent correspondence with many of his friends who were in the army, and above all, with his brother Lodovico. This was an important time for him, when his priestly vocation matured and he entered the Seminary. In his letters he also explains his spiritual attitude to the War, ideas that he was later to draw on as Archbishop of Milan and Pope Paul VI: the need to seek, in the evil which devastates humankind, the possibility of good and the workings of Providence.

El joven Giovanni Battista Montini vivió intensamente el período de la Primera Guerra Mundial ya que, aunque no fue llamado a las armas, siguió, a través de una frecuente correspondencia, las vicisitudes de tantos soldados amigos y sobre todo de su hermano Ludovico. Este tiempo fue muy importante para él, pues maduró su vocación sacerdotal y entró en el Seminario. En sus cartas expone también su actitud espiritual sobre la guerra, ideas que volverán a salir a flote como Arzobispo de Milán y como papa Pablo VI: buscar en el mal que devasta a los hombres la posibilidad del bien confiado a la Providencia.
