The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of the right to privacy in the medical relationship among the patient or user and the professionals that provide medical assistance. With this aim, the first part tackles the evolution of the right to privacy, its different angles and its connection with the new fundamental right to personal data protection, underlying the complexity of the right to privacy as a reflection of the intricacy of the human dignity and of the concrete human existence. Standing on this legs, the second part analyses the aspects of the right to privacy especially implied in the medical relationship: the bodily privacy and sense of decency of the patient and the right to confidentiality of the patient regarding the information that affects him or her and to which the professional has access in the medical relationship. In this context the medical secret appears not only as a moral duty to the physician but as a legal obligation derived from the right to privacy of the patient, and its necessary limits to harmonize the aforementioned right with other rights are analyzed.es_ES
