Palacios y Ayuntamientos en el País Vasco. Semejanzas y diferencias con Navarra

Abstract

Los más antiguos palacios conservados en el País Vasco se remontan a fines del gótico, en torno a 1500. Se definieron entonces las líneas evolutivas de la arquitectura palacial vasca: incremento de la superficie útil; más, mayores y más ordenados vanos; individualización de las estancias; potenciación de la fachada principal... Los palacios fueron escasos en el renacimiento, para generalizarse durante el barroco. Y en este período se construyeron las principales casas consistoriales del País, un conjunto de sorprendente calidad. La totalidad de las tipologías palaciales que se dan en el País Vasco existen también en Navarra. Sin embargo, allí parece darse una mayor densidad de palacios, aunque de calidad media más modesta. Además en Navarra es más frecuente el patio, más abundante el uso del ladrillo y más profusa la ornamentación.

The oldest palaces conserved in the Basque Country go back by the end of the gothic style, around 1500. The development lines of the Basque palacial architecture were defined then: increase of the useful space; more, major and more ordered windows; individualisation of the rooms; to emphasize the main facade... The palaces were few in the renaissance, to become very abundant during the baroque. And in this period the main consistorial houses of the Country, a set of surprising quality, were constructed. The totality of the palacial typologies that can be seen in the Basque Country also exists in Navarre. Nevertheless, in the Basque Country it seems to have a greater density, although of more modest average quality. On the contrary in Navarre is more abundant the patio, more frequent the use of the brick and more profuse the ornamentation.
