La reconstrucción del castillo-palacio de Monteagudo en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII

Abstract

Francisco Magallón y Beaumont, V marqués de San Adrián –abuelo del famoso marqués retratado por Goya–, asumió en 1753 una herencia prácticamente arruinada, entre la que se contaba el castillo-palacio de Monteagudo. Tras años de abandono en los que ni había sido habitado ni se había efectuado reforma alguna, estaba a punto de desplomarse. Esta forta- leza representaba el señorío jurisdiccional de los Magallón sobre la villa, de ahí que el marqués decidiese reconstruirlo, gastando en ello considerables cantidades de dinero. El encargado del proyecto fue José Marzal y Gil, el mejor arquitecto de la zona, y las obras se desarrollaron aproximadamente entre 1766 y 1777.

Francisco Magallón y Beaumont, Vth marquis of San Adrián –grandfather of the famous marquis painted by Goya–, received in 1753 a bankruptcy heri- tage. One of the properties he inherited was the Monteagudo castle. After years abandoned and ignored, when no one lived in, the castle threatened to collapse. The fortress represented the feudal domain of the Magallón's on Monteagudo. That is the reason why the Vth marquis of San Adrián spent important amounts of money in the reconstruction of the building. The architect Jose Marzal y Gil, the better in the area, was in charge of the project and the works took place between 1766 and 1777.
