Historias generales de la Iglesia en el Perú: estado de la cuestión, 1953-2014

Abstract

El pasado católico del Perú, en todos sus aspectos y facetas, ha sido objeto de varios estudios desde la etapa virreinal hasta nuestros días. Es a mediados del siglo pasado en el que podemos descubrir historias generales orgánicas, a partir de la obra católico-militante y positivista de Rubén Vargas Ugarte, S.J., que ha sido continuada, desde otras perspectivas y con un objetivo difusor por Armando Nieto, S.J., y por Enrique Fernández, S.J. Para el caso exclusivamente republicano destacamos las contribuciones de Luis Lituma, que parte de la realidad eclesiástica de los años sesenta, de José Dammert, en su breve informe sobre el siglo XX, y la de Jeffrey Klaiber, S.J., de enfoque social y político. En esta tarea académica hallamos también el aporte de otros historiadores, cuyas investigaciones están dirigidas a la construcción de una historia gene- ral de la Iglesia en el Perú.

Since viceregal times, Peru’s ecclesiastical past –in all its aspects and facets– has been the subject of numerous studies. However, it is only after the 1950s, that we find complete general histories which are based on the militant-catholic and positivist work of Ruben Vargas Ugarte, S.J., and which would then be continued by Armando Nieto Velez, S.J., and Enrique Fernández García, S.J., with other perspectives and with a dissemination objective. Regarding Catholic Church history during the Republican years, Luis Lituma’s contributions on the ecclesiastical reality of the 1960s are worth noting, as are José Dammert’s brief report on the 20th century and Jeffrey Klaiber’s writings based on social and political history. This academic endeavor includes the work of other historians, whose research is directed towards building a general history of the Catholic Church in Peru.
