Los dichos de «ser exaltado» en los Padres de la Iglesia

Abstract

Los dichos de «ser exaltado» (Jn 3,14; 8,28 y 12,32ss.) son clave para la comprensión de la teología de la muerte de Cristo que presenta el Cuarto evangelio. Si bien ha habido progresos en su exégesis, se echa en falta un desarrollo que tenga más en cuenta la recepción de esos textos en la historia de la Iglesia. Se exponen aquí las referencias patrísticas más importantes a los dichos de «ser exaltado», con un interés especial en aquellas que puedan ayudar a ver qué significa esa expresión, en especial, las que al presentar la cruz como signo salvífico, permiten confirmar que la tradición de la Iglesia ha puesto en un lugar central a la cruz (y no a la ascensión) en esta presentación joánica del misterio pascual.

The lifted-up sayings (Jn 3:14, 8:28 and 12:32ff.) are essential to understand the theology of Christ’s death that is developed in the Fourth Gospel. Albeit there has been great progress in their exegesis, we still lack an elaboration that takes the reception of these texts more into account. In this paper we present the most important patristic references to the lifted-up sayings, with a particular interest in those that might help to understand the meaning of that «being lifted-up»: those references that, presenting the cross as a salvific sign allow as to confirm that the Church’s tradition has put the cross (and not the ascension) in the centre of this Johannine presentation of the Paschal Mystery
