Abstract

Las alegorías de la navegación tienen una prolífica tradición, tanto en el contexto clásico greco-latino como en el cristiano. La navegación puede aparecer como alegoría de la existencia: vivir es estar embarcado. El mar es metáfora de las tribulaciones humanas. También, cruzar los mares, es decir, transgredir el orden inviolable del macro cosmos, puede considerarse signo de ambición y avaricia. Navegar puede apuntar a una suerte de crítica cultural: se navega para salir de los confines en que uno vive, para mejorar la fortuna. La liquidez del agua y la liquidez del dinero abren la posibilidad, por otra parte, de cooperación entre extraños. El espectador, que desde la orilla contempla el naufragio ajeno, representa una condición existencial. En Quevedo alude principalmente al alejamiento del poder, el control de las pasiones y la vida retirada. The sea is the metaphor of human tribulation. To cross the seas is also to transgress the order of the macrocosms, and can be considered a sign of ambition and avarice. Navigation can point to a sort of cultural critique: you navigate to be able to leave the confines in which you live, to improve your fortune. The liquidity of water and that of money open the possibility in other instances of cooperation between strangers. The spectator that contemplates another’s shipwreck from the shoreline represents an existentialist condition. In Quevedo, it alludes to the disengagement of power, a control of passions and a detached life.
