La historización del español de Chile en Raza Chilena de Nicolás Palacios (1904)

Abstract

Debido a que la mayoría de los intelectuales chilenos del s. XIX (como Andrés Bello) abrazaron ideales racionalistas en lo relativo al lenguaje, en Chile prevaleció una actitud negativa hacia los rasgos dialectales particulares del español de Chile, pues estos atentaban contra una anhelada unidad de la lengua. Al terminar el siglo, no obstante, encontramos en Raza Chilena de Nicolás Palacios un caso aislado de oposición a la opinión mayoritaria. Este autor muestra una actitud positiva hacia el español popular chileno pues, tomando ideas del pensamiento racial de los darwinistas sociales, considera que este dialecto es una manifestación auténtica del alma de la raza chilena. Palacios recurre a varios procesos lingüístico-ideológicos, tales como la iconización y el ocultamiento. Sin embargo, la principal operación ideológica que realiza Palacios es la historización, proceso mediante el que Palacios, en el marco del nacionalismo etnolingüístico, reelabora de manera revisionista la historia de la lengua española con el fin de dotar de legitimidad al español popular de Chile.

An intense ideological debate concerning the future of Spanish in the independent nations took placein latin America during the 19th century. In Chile, most intellectuals (such as Andrés Bello) embraced rationalist ideals, seeking the international unity of Spanish for the benefi t of political interests. Within this frame, a negative attitude towards regional Chilean linguistic features of Spanish prevailed. At the end of this century, however, we fi nd a sole case which opposes the current dominant view: Nicolás Palacios’ Raza Chilena (1904). Palacios, infl uenced by the racial thinking of Social Darwinists, shows a positive attitude towards Chilean Spanish. He considers it as an authentic manifestation of the soul of the Chilean race. Palacios uses different language ideological processes, such as iconization and erasure. Notwithstanding, the main ideological process used by Palacios is historicization. Within the frame of ethnolinguistic nationalism, Palacios re-tells the history of the Spanish language in a revisionist manner, in order to legitimize popular Chilean Spanish.
