Abstract
The title of this paper, chosen for the preliminary summary, alludes to the difficulty in finding information about the photographer. More than that, it comes from the desire of finding his photographs so as to enjoy his finely tuned look at the architecture of his time. A couple of months later, having analysed more material, it could have been changed for one more closely related to the value of the codes established in photography by the middle of the last century. Thede’s work is the result of a way of looking that spread quickly just as it happened with the criteria of architectural formalisation that it wanted to represent. From the sixties onwards, modern architectural photography suffered the same fate as the object of its work. Its products came to be understood as the repetition of formulas instead of as the result of a visual system. This was seen as a stranglehold on the creativity of photographers who only reproduced sterile schemes for publicity or even proselytising purposes. Thede’s work allows us the opportunity of delving deeper into the constructive and formative value of architectural photography. His images are proof of how those composition criteria allowed photographers to communicate what architecture wanted to convey. Professional photographers, who did not think of themselves as artists and had learnt how to look at architecture following these guidelines, were able to interpret it, make it known and, at the same time, expose their particular creativity.
