Abstract

La revelación inicial de Dios fue recibida en la Iglesia desde Israel, de quien recibió también los libros que configuran el Antiguo Testamento. A estos libros la Iglesia ha asociado inseparablemente otros escritos inspirados realizados en su seno, expresión de su fe en Jesús, el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, mediador y plenitud de toda la revelación. Para el cristiano en la Iglesia, la interpretación de los textos del Antiguo Testamento tiene por eso un preciso horizonte referencial: el de la salvación en Jesucristo. Su convicción estriba en que «es una misma Palabra de Dios la que se extiende en todas las Escrituras, un mismo Verbo el que resuena en la boca de todos los escritores sagrados, el que, siendo al comienzo Dios junto a Dios, no necesita sílabas porque no está sometido al tiempo» (San Agustín).

The initial revelation of God was received in the Church from Israel, which also yielded the books that make up the Old Testament. The Church has associated these books inseparably with other inspired writings produced within the Christian fold, which are an expression of its faith in Jesus, in Christ, the Son of God, mediator and fullness of all revelation. For the Christian in the Church, the interpretation of the Old Testament texts has a precise referential horizon: that of salvation in Jesus Christ. Its conviction lies in the fact that «it is the one Word of God that extends throughout all the Scriptures, one Verb that sounds in the mouth of all the sacred writers, which, being at the beginning God with God, does not need syllables because it is not subject to time» (St Augustine).
