Fe, razón y amor. Los discursos de Ratisbona

Abstract

Es bien conocido el discurso pronunciado por Benedicto XVI en Ratisbona el 12 de septiembre de 2006 —y las respuestas y reacciones más o menos proporcionadas que suscitó—, y algunos lo han considerado como una respuesta a lo ocurrido el 11 de septiembre de 2001. Sin embargo, una simple lectura del texto ayuda a descubrir sin problemas que no es este —razón e islam— el único tema allí abordado, y tal vez tampoco el más importante 1. Si leemos los textos en su contexto, veremos que Benedicto XVI no sólo pronunció el discurso del aula magna de la universidad, y así se refirió no sólo a la razón, sino también a la fe y al amor en otros discursos ese mismo día. Toda la jornada de Ratisbona tiene de este modo un significado unitario. Son éstos los tres grandes temas de aquella —en apariencia— tranquila jornada, que bien podrían servir de pórtico de entrada a otros tantos. El tenerlos en cuenta como punto de partida nos podría servir para afrontar después otros aspectos más en profundidad como la relación entre razón y revelación, la helenización o la importancia de la razón y la filosofía en el cristianismo.

The address given by Benedict XVI in Regensburg on 12th September 2006 is well known - as are the diverse answers and reactions that occurred. Some people consider this to be a response to what happened on 11th September 2001. However, if we read the text we discover that the issue of reason and faith is not the only theme that is mentioned, and it may not even be the most important theme that is addressed in the speech. If we read the text in its context, we will realise that Benedict XVI not only delivered a talk in the Great Hall of the University, but that he also made reference to reason, faith and love in other speeches on that day. All the Regensburg speeches have a special unitary meaning. These are the three main themes of that apparently tranquil day, which could serve as an introduction to many other issues. If we take these main themes into account as a starting point, we could use them to tackle some more profound matters such as the relationship between reason and revelation, the importance of classical Greece or the importance of reason and philosophy in Christianity.
