Entre Propercio y Persio: Quevedo, poeta erudito

Abstract

Como artífice insuperable de los lenguajes literarios de su época, Quevedo fue fundamentalmente receptor ideal de unos textos clásicos que se habían convertido en modelos temáticos y en modelos de estilo y que regían el trabajo retórico de la inventio, de la dispositio y de la elocutio, puestos al servicio de la agudeza y arte de ingenio que codificaría años más tarde Baltasar Gracián. Al incorporar citas de los clásicos a su propio discurso literario, Quevedo cumplía con el precepto graciano que exigía el aprovechamiento y correcta aplicación de la docta erudición a la construcción de perfectas agudezas. En este trabajo se estudia la reelaboración quevediana de las citas identificadas de algunos poetas latinos entre los cuales se cuentan Propercio y Persio, dos autores privilegiados por Justo Lipsio, a quien Quevedo admiró no sólo como filósofo neoestoico sino también como filólogo e intérprete de los clásicos. As an unbeatable craftsman of the literary language of his time, Quevedo was first and foremost an ideal receiver of classical texts, which had become thematic and stylistic models that governed the rhetorical work of the inventio, the dispositio and the elocutio. These in turn were pressed into service to build that art of wit which Baltasar Gracián would codify years later in his Agudeza y arte de ingenio. Thus Quevedo fulfilled Gracián’s precepts that required the correct application of erudition to the construction of perfect conceits. This paper offers a study of Quevedo’s reelaboration of identified quotations from some Latin poets, among which are Propertius and Persius. Both authors had been privileged by Justus Lipsius, whom Quevedo had admired not only as a Neostoic philosopher but also as a philologist and interpreter of the classics.
