Teatro y poder: máscaras sociales y máscaras carnavalescas

Abstract

En el texto, la palabra «máscara» es tratada en un amplio sentido, igual que en el Siglo de Oro, es decir, no solamente como un objeto, sino como un peculiar tipo de disfraz, como apariencia. El artículo establece una distinción entre la «máscara carnavalesca», expresión de libertad y alegría, y la «máscara social», la cual asume las normas vigentes del sistema. Son máscaras que están presentes en la vida política y sirven para legitimar el poder, son máscaras que demuestran la conexión entre la fiesta y lo sagrado. Ambos tipos de máscara también estarán presentes en el teatro, y ambos se complementan.

In the text, the word «mask» is treated in a broad sense, like that in the Spanish Golden Age, i.e., not only as an object, but as a peculiar type of disguise, as appearance. The article makes a distinction between «carnival mask», expression of freedom and happiness, and "social mask", which assumes current standards of the system. There are masks that are present in the political life and served to legitimize power, masks in religious life, showing the connection between the festive and the sacred. Both types of mask will also be present in the theatre, and both complement each other.
