La construcción inspirada del Antiguo Cercano Oriente: dimensión religiosa del ladrillo y la piedra

Abstract

Muchas de las obras de arquitectura más relevantes del Antiguo Oriente tenían una dimensión sagrada y religiosa. Estas se realizaban por indicación divina a reyes, tal era su carácter inspirado. Fuera de la indicación y revelación divina, la construcción era considerada impía quedando expuesta, junto a toda la ciudad, a la maldición, al castigo y a la ruina. Este carácter inspirado encuentra su reflejo en los materiales con que se construían tales obras: ladrillo y piedra. Uno y otro no son meras causas materiales sino la representación material de los poderes y atributos de las divinidades. El ladrillo era tenido como material que se moldea por-que la actividad de los dioses es modelar y moldear. La piedra era considerada el material más idóneo para representar la eternidad, lo estable y lo perenne como leyes, mandatos y verdades.

Many of the most important works of architecture of the ancient East had a sacred and religious dimension. These were carried out by divine indication to Kings, such was their inspired nature. Outside the indication and divine revelation, construction was considered unholy being exposed, next to the city, to the curse, punishment and ruin. This inspired character finds its reflection in the materials with which such works were built: brick and stone. One and the other are not mere material causes but the material representation of the powers and attributes of the deities. The brick was taken as moulding material because the activity of the gods is shaping and molding. The stone was considered the most suitable material to represent eternity, the stable and the perennial such as laws, mandates and truths.
