Matrimonio y familia en los Padres de la Iglesia

Abstract

En época patrística se elabora una primera reflexión sobre matrimonio y familia. Los Padres apostólicos y apologistas exhortan a la fidelidad matrimonial y a una educación apropiada de los hijos, y también defienden el matrimonio frente a los rigoristas que lo condenan. Clemente de Alejandría y Tertuliano elaboran las primeras intuiciones teológicas. Durante gran parte del siglo IV las disputas con el arrianismo focalizan los esfuerzos de los autores católicos, pero superado ya ese escollo, Agustín de Hipona, en el occidente latino, y Juan Crisóstomo, en el oriente griego, dedican a la institución matrimonial considerable atención en su producción escrita y oral.

The Fathers elaborated a first reflection on marriage and family. The apostolic Fathers and the apologists put an emphasis on the marriage fidelity and the appropriate education of the children, and also defended the marriage against those who condemned it. Clement of Alexandria and Tertullian formulated the first theological intuitions. In the fourth century, the disputes with the Arianism intensified the efforts of Catholic writers; once this obstacle was overcome, Augustine of Hippo in the Latin West and John Chrysostom in the Greek East paid considerable attention to the matrimonial institution in their writings and preaching.
