El segundo P.E.N Club madrileño, una sociedad de intelectuales de derechas en la crisis de los treinta

Abstract

Este trabajo reconstruye el renacimiento y la efímera historia del segundo P.E.N. Club madrileño (1935-1936). Describe las tendencias mayoritariamente conservadoras de sus miembros y la futilidad de sus actividades, a espaldas de la realidad social del momento. Presenta el club como un intento fallido de sociedad de intelectuales que trata de promover el entendimiento entre los escritores, pero que termina convirtiéndose en una reunión de buena sociedad y que muere fruto de su sectarismo y de la radicalización de la España de esos años. This article reconstructs the rebirth and short-lived history of Madrid’s second P.E.N. Club (1935-1936). It points out the mostly conservative ideas of the club’s members and the futility of its activities, which ignored the difficult social reality of the moment. The club was a failed attempt of a group of intellectuals who set out to promote understanding among writers, but ended up being no more than a reunion of high society and died as a result of its own sectarianism and the general radicalization experienced by Spanish society at that time.
