¿El santo o la esfinge? El teatro ante la crisis del 1898

Abstract

El texto revisa la situación del teatro español en el contexto del "desastre" del 98, detectando dos corrientes principales: el teatro popular, festivo, que tiene éxito entre el público, donde siempre está el modelo de buenos/malos y que contiene solapadas referencias a la Guerra. La segunda tendencia es una reacción ante la primera y estará preconizada por Miguel de Unamuno y su obra "La esfinge", donde existe una dura lección moral a la indiferencia del arte español ante los difíciles sucesos del 98. The text reviews the situation of Spanish theater in the context of the disaster of ‘98, detecting two popular currents: popular, festive theater that has success with the public, where there is always good and bad and that contains underhanded references to the War. The second tendency is a reaction in face of the first and it will be pondered by Miguel de Unamuno and his work "The Sphinx", where there exists a hard moral lesson to the indifference of Spanish art before the difficult events of ‘98.
