La ciencia en el fantástico ambiguo: "Un fenómeno inexplicable" de Leopoldo Lugones

Abstract

En “Un fenómeno inexplicable” (1906) de Leopoldo Lugones, la ciencia (entendida, en primer lugar, como ciencia empírica) juega papeles importantes en diferentes niveles del relato. En este artículo, con los fines de estudiar la presencia de la ciencia en el cuento, se comienza por discutir la polisemia del término ciencia, presentándose luego el contexto de publicación del mismo –la revista “Philadelphia” y el libro “Las fuerzas extrañas” –. Con esto en mente, se abordará el análisis textual, que permitirá apreciar la estrecha relación existente entre la estructura de relato enmarcado y la ciencia, como asimismo la importancia fundamental que tendrá la ciencia en la historia narrada. Sin embargo, el cuento de Lugones no es una alabanza de las ciencias empíricas, sino por el contrario, el autor las utiliza para mostrar sus limitaciones ante experiencias trascendentales. In “The inexplicable Phenomenon” by Leopoldo Lugones, science (understood in the first place as empirical science) plays important roles at different levels of the discourse. In order to study the presence of science in the story, the polysemy of the word ‘science’ is discussed and its context of publication is presented –the journal “Philadelphia” and the book “Las fuerzas extrañas” (Strange Forces)–. With this in mind, a textual, analysis is carried out, which will enable us to appreciate the close relationship between science will have in the story narrated. However, this short story by Lugones is not a praise of science; on the contrary, it makes use of it in order to point out its limitations when faced with transcendental experiences.
