Los criados portugueses del príncipe de Esquilache, virrey del Perú, 1615-1621

Abstract

Cuando el príncipe de Esquilache fue nombrado virrey del Perú llevó entre su numeroso séquito cuatro criados portugueses. Aunque vasallos del mismo monarca, los portugueses tuvieron el estatuto de extranjeros: tenían prohibido el paso a las Indias, así como comerciar en ellas. No obstante, portaron licencia para el viaje y, posteriormente, llegarían a ocupar cargos dentro de la administración indiana. El objeto de este artículo es dar cuenta de las posibilidades que tuvieron estos individuos extranjeros para acceder a las gracias y mercedes del virrey de turno, sin contar con las cartas de naturaleza. Asimismo, se analizan los niveles que alcanzaron los vínculos sociales y las activi-dades económicas de estos hombres de confianza del virrey, en la medida en que estas últimas se habrían visto favorecidas por su cercanía al poder.

When the Prince of Esquilache became Viceroy of Peru, he brought four Portuguese servants as part of his large entourage. Although they were vassals of the same monarch, the Portuguese had the status of foreign-ers: they were among the people who were forbidden to t to the Indies and trade with them. However, they carried licenses for the trip and would later hold high positions within the Spanish-American administration. The purpose of this article is to give an account of the possibilities that these foreign individuals had to accede to the grace and favor of the viceroy, regardless of not possessing letters of naturalization. The article also analyzes the levels of the social ties and economic activities achieved by these confidants of the viceroy, and the extent to which the latter benefitted from their proximity to political power.
