dc.description.abstract | This article examines four themes that appear in Quevedo’s La Fortuna con seso y la hora de todos: the rights of the American Indians, of blacks and of women, as well as the utopian vision offered at the end of the last episode of the book. In this work, which Quevedo subtitled «Moral fantasy», he offers his readers notions that are extraordinarily progressive, and which he may, or may not, have shared himself. These notions are particularly striking when seen alongside the terrifying condemnation of the Jews to be found in this same work. In this sense, as is argued here, La Fortuna con seso y la hora de todos is a complex and elusive work. Whilst, as is generally thought, he may have been a reactionary in his politics, here, at least, Quevedo can be seen to be prepared to put forward ideas that are ahead of his time. | - |
