Sátiros y otros seres velludos en el teatro áureo: «La casa de los celos» de Cervantes, «Las Batuecas del Duque de Alba» de Lope de Vega y «El nuevo mundo descubierto en Castilla» de Matos Fragoso

Abstract

El presente artículo pretende investigar la pervivencia en el teatro del Siglo de Oro de elementos relacionados con la figura dramática del sátiro. La primera parte del trabajo describe las características principales del personaje del sátiro en el teatro griego antiguo, sobre todo en lo que se refiere a su presentación en el Cíclope de Eurípides, el único drama completo conservado de este fenómeno teatral. Unos pocos fragmentos de otros dramaturgos se evocan también. Desde este punto de partida el estudio considera ejemplos de tres obras áureas escritas respectivamente por Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, y Juan de Matos Fragoso. La última obra es una refundición del drama lopesco. Se intenta identificar y analizar las similitudes y diferencias principales entre las formas antigua y moderna.

The present article seeks to examine the survival in Spanish Golden Age theatre of elements pertaining to the dramatic figure of the satyr. The first part of the paper describes some of the major characteristics of the satyr in ancient Greek drama, especially as can be found in Euripides’ Cyclops, the only extant complete example of this type of theatre. Some other fragments from other playwrights are discussed briefly. From this starting point the study goes on to offer examples from three Golden Age plays written respectively by Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Juan de Matos Fragoso, the last play being a reworking of the Lopean drama. An attempt is made to identify and analyze the main similarities and differences between the two forms, ancient and modern.
