La oración en Máximo el Confesor

Abstract

Maximus the Confessor’s teaching on prayer takes into consideration the progressive states undergone by those striving to live the Christian faith: the initial predominance of struggle against bad habits, the triumph of serenity in the soul which makes it possible to receive illuminations from God by means of contemplation, the union with God in the midst of the silence of human concepts. His interest in the prayer of petition is manifested in his consideration of how the relationship between what we desire and what God wants for us influences the prayer’s efficacy; he additionally reflects on the need to accompany petitions with personal fulfillment of God’s law. Maximus conceives the growth in Christian life as a progressive welcoming of grace that fills humanity with Jesus Christ. He provides a commentary on Jesus’ prayer during his agony in the garden that emphasizes the Lord’s effort to unite his human will with God’s will, which also belongs to him, to Jesus as the Word.

Máximo Confesor ofrece una enseñanza sobre la oración que tiene en cuenta los estados progresivos por los que pasan quienes luchan por vivir su fe cristiana: el predominio inicial de la lucha contra las malas costumbres, el triunfo en el alma de una serenidad que permite acoger por medio de la contemplación las luces de Dios, la unión con Dios en medio del silencio de los conceptos humanos. Se interesa especialmente por la oración de petición, reflexionando sobre cómo influye en su eficacia la relación entre lo que nosotros deseamos y lo que Dios quiere para nosotros y sobre la necesidad de acompañar las peticiones con el cumplimiento personal de la ley de Dios. Máximo concibe el crecimiento en la vida cristiana como una progresiva acogida de la gracia que llena la humanidad de Jesucristo y comenta la oración de Jesús en el huerto de los olivos dando relieve al esfuerzo del Señor por unir su voluntad humana con la voluntad de Dios que es también de él, de Jesús, en cuanto Verbo.
