El padre ante el parto en la España de los siglos XVI y XVII

Abstract

El parto, sobre todo desde que el antropólogo Van Gennep sistematizara el estudio de los ritos de paso, ha sido objeto de atención desde diferentes disciplinas (antropología, historia de la medicina, sociología, demografía, psicología, literatura, historia social…), con una especial y lógica atención hacia la madre y hacia la experiencia de la maternidad. Estos estudios han demostrado cómo se desarrolló en la modernidad temprana un ritual propio de la cultura femenina en torno al parto. Este artículo pretende abordar el tema desde otra perspectiva, analizando la presencia, participación, actitudes y funciones del padre durante el embarazo, en el parto y tras el alumbramiento, a través de los testimonios proporcionados, fundamentalmente, por moralistas de la España de los siglos XVI y XVII, así como por testimonios documentales.

Delivery, especially since the anthropologist Van Gennep systematized the study of rites of passage, has been subject of attention and debate from different disciplines (anthropology, medical history, sociology, demography, psychology, literature, cultural and social history…), with a special and logical attention to mothers and towards the idea of motherhood. These studies have demonstrated how, in Early Modernity, a female culture was developed around childbirth. This article tries to approach the subject from another perspective, analyzing the presence, participation, attitudes and functions of fathers during the pregnancy, in the childbirth and immediatly after birth, through the testimonies provided, fundamentally, by Spanish moralists and theologians in XVIth and XVIIth, and other historical documents (old chronicles, lawsuits…).
