(Marco Antonio)
The management or governance of the company is of vital importance for its development and that of the people who work in it and with whom it relates. The study of the anthropological basis of action can provide important elements for carrying out this task. To this end, a study of the proposal on the acts of the will elaborated by Thomas Aquinas and based on the contributions of Leonardo Polo is proposed; it begins with the study of human’s possessive and effusive desire and continues with an analysis of Aquinas’ proposal based on Polo’s observations on this subject. In the conclusions, the fields of application to management and business are proposed.

We analyze the first stretch of the productive process, which is common to all forms of human production and enhances our understanding of them. This process begins when the locomotive faculties implement the chosen project; develops according to the «trial-error-new trial…» method; and will achieve its immediate goal when a product that conforms closely enough to the guiding idea is obtained. However, this first step does not accomplish the initial purpose of the productive process, which will only be attained when the product is used. Once the notion of use is introduced, the elemental notion of utility is derived from the consideration of the first type of use of the product.

A new concept has made its way into the external action of companies: corporate diplomacy, a resource of good practices that provides companies with proven formulas to navigate in a world of complex and changing scenarios. The study of historical precedents shows that corporate diplomacy is perfectly applicable to international corporate action. These techniques, based on the traditional principles of public diplomacy, will allow companies to develop actions that go beyond the purely commercial aspects to establish lasting human and economic links; strategies that humanize the business mission as an ideal procedure for the commercial expansion of our days. With this objective, the corporate diplomat must show certain technical knowledge, professional skills and human qualities to be able to exert influence, discover areas of cooperation in the target country and build the good reputation of their company, that is, all the areas in which corporate diplomacy is effective. This is the case of companies that have seen the profitability of business diplomacy reflected in management success and international recognition.

This communication tries to expose some keys of Polo about the company, as a place of social change and of hope for the growth of the human person. It is understood that the anthropological contributions of his approach can be assumed to overcome the current crisis of what is today understood by Directive Action or Management. To expose these keys, it is proposed to take a tour through the different Management schools in dialogue with their authors and proposals to try to overcome the reductive perspective they have. It seeks to expose Polo’s contribution that can be added or what he suggests to rectify to overcome the reductive views of the company and the man working in it. In this communication, the Poliana complaint against the homo oeconomicus approach that the first so-called scientific management school of F. Taylor raises will be exposed.

La Revista Católica de Cuestiones Sociales, 1895-1916: La Recepción de la Rerum Novarum
(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2022) Ramos-Gorostiza, J.L. (José Luis); Martínez-Vara, T. (Tomás)
The birth of the Revista Católica de Cuestiones Sociales (1895-1930) coincided with the true “take-off” of Spanish Social Catholicism, which had a notable relevance at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. It was one of the most important and long-lasting journals of those that spread the Social Doctrine of the Church in Spain, and a large part of the Catholic intelligentsia of the time would participate in it. The objective of this work is to analyze how the great social encyclical of Leo XIII, the Rerum Novarum (1891), were received in the journal during its early years (1895-1916), with some occasional allusion to the Graves de Communi (1901). Although with nuances derived from the coexistence of “fundamentalist” visions with other more “advanced” ones, in this periodical publication a fairly traditional and conservative reading of both texts was generally made.

Polo explains synderesis as a proactive principle. Human effusiveness needs personal discipline and formal organisation to be constructive. A harmonic relationship between intelligence and emotions constitutes a platform for hope and gratification. Feelings indicate that positive activities and good productions bring satisfaction and perfect the working person. Managers must exercise and promote activities to realise the company’s goals. Goal-setting structures human time with a wide variety of means so that people can give more and keep on giving, i.e. without wearing themselves out unnecessarily. The OKR methodology concretises some of Polo’s fundamental anthropological notions. Objective setting and instruments to measure results support workers’ autonomy and initiative. The feedback given with this work system promotes trust and the internalisation of the gratifications for the results achieved.
