- El agua en la poesía de Quevedo(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2020) Arellano, I. (Ignacio)The article exemplifies some of the varieties of expressive mechanisms that organize the motive of water in Quevedo’s poetry, adding a small anthology of the various categories that water acquires in its metamorphosis according to the different muses of the Parnaso español.
- Quevedo y la cuestión de las emociones(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2020) Checa, J. (Jorge)By concentrating on a selected group of poems and moral treatises, this article seeks to compare and contrast Quevedo’s different attitudes toward the emotional dimension of human beings. The main point of reference will be the intense and problematic relation of the author with classical Stoicism —a relation in which Quevedo’s admiration toward figures such as Seneca and Epictetus must coexist with Augustine’s rejection of Stoic apathy. Such coexistence produces evident tensions in the oeuvre of Quevedo, insofar as his advocacy of detachment and self-control collides with his encouragement to use in virtuous ways those affects that may help our eternal salvation. Quevedo’s devotional poetry goes beyond the stoical and neo-stoical outlooks on emotions. Here he proposes what can be described as an economic investment of sinful passions with the hope of attaining moral knowledge and repentance through the painful experience of desengaño.
- Una lectura barroca de la mitología: la figura de Apolo en la poesía de Quevedo(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2020) Torres-Salinas, G. (Ginés)In this work we intend to make an exhaustive study of Apollo’s figure in Francisco de Quevedo’s poetry. Traditionally, two sonnets have been studied in that way, «Bermejazo platero de las cumbres» and «Tras vos un alquimista va corriendo». With our work we intend deepen the study of texts from complete Quevedo’s poetic work. Our purpose is to show how, in the vast majority of them, the Quevedesque reading of Apollo’s myth breaks with the Renaissance tradition —especially with the Neoplatonic solar imagery— to read it from a fully baroque perspective.

(José Manuel)This article presents an unknown and unpublished text written by Quevedo, the Memorial de don Francisco de Quevedo Villegas dado a la Inquisición General sobre los libros del Monte Santo de Granada, with an annotated edition and preceded by an introductory study. The study shows evidence for Quevedo’s authorship of the text and suggests an approximate date of composition. In the Memorial, Quevedo defends the fake nature of the texts and relics found in the Sacromonte de Granada and urges the Inquisition to burn them down instead of sending them to Rome for further examination, as Pope Urban VIII had requested. The text confirms Quevedo’s inclination to influence issues of government as well as his adhesion to Catholic orthodoxy and his aspiration to historiographical rigour.
- Sobre la fecha de redacción de "Doctrina moral" y "Doctrina estoica", de Quevedo(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2020) Tobar-Quintanar, M.J. (María José)In 1612 Quevedo sent a stoic text written by himself to Tomás Tamayo de Vargas. The critics have related this text to two Quevedo’s works: Doctrina moral and Doctrina estoica. In this paper, in order to elucidate the date of these treatises, both of them are compared with regard to their manuscript tradition, the number and the nature of the quotes used in them, the equivalence (or not) registered in their pages between the stoic doctrine and the Christian beliefs, and the presence (or not) of arguments about some principles of the Stoa. All the data point out that Doctrina moral was written in an early date and Doctrina estoica much later (around 1633-1634). This article also shows some thematic and ideological links between Doctrina moral and the writing sent in 1612.
- Teoría y práctica en la poesía de Quevedo: la "compositio" fonética y silábica(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2020) Llamas-Martínez, J. (Jacobo)This work aims to rigorously evaluate the distance that exists between theory and poetic practice in Quevedo. The article compares Quevedo’s theoretical approaches in Preliminares literarios a las obras del Bachiller Francisco de la Torre, which contains the most technical observations on the phonetic and syllabic compositio (encounters between sounds, syncopations, apocopes, hiatus and diphthongs), with the way the writer uses these elements in his verses. The analysis reveals that Quevedo was consistent with the literary judgments of Preliminares and that the examination of the phonetic and syllabic compositio within Quevedo’s texts can be helpful when editing his works.
