- La desdramatización de la jácara en Quevedo reformada por Calderón(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2019) Fernández-Mosquera, S. (Santiago)The doubt about the origin of the "jácara" gender can throw different perspectives on its function and characteristics in the works of Quevedo. Initially, the "jácara" does not necessarily have a theatrical origin, but rather a lyrical one, when the poet begins its regeneration and strengthening. Just years later, with the intervention, among others, of Calderón de la Barca, the "jácaras" become fully dramatic and acquire the theatrical values that are few, if not null, in the difficult texts of Quevedo.
- De espadas y de cañas: esgrima y astrología en las jácaras de Quevedo(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2019) Olmedo-Gobante, M. (Manuel); de-Armas, F.A. (Frederick A.)This article takes up the matter of classifying Quevedo’s jácaras. Two criteria are proposed: one that follows the narrative structure and a second that deals with the predominant themes. In addition, the article studies questions of fencing and astrology in these works. These two disciplines are used by Quevedo to underline his own style of writing jácaras, one that is based on the dissonance between the popular and the learned. This contrast serves to transgress the principle of decorum in the themes utilized. Finally, the essay analyses the possible social and political implications that may emerge from the uses of fencing and astrology in the genre of the jácaras.
- "La zurriaga de Perinola": edición crítica de un texto inédito contra Quevedo(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2019) Plata-Parga, F. (Fernando)This article offers a critical and annotated edition of La zurriaga, a hitherto unpublished text, part of the literary polemic triggered by Quevedo in 1632 with his attack against Pérez de Montalbán. This new text is an anonymous libel attacking Quevedo’s La perinola, while refuting some of the criticism levelled by Quevedo against Pérez de Montalbán’s Para todos. This critical edition is based on three manuscripts held in libraries in Madrid, one of which attributes the text to father Niseno.
- El imaginario del "cerco" en Quevedo. «Miré los muros de la patria mía» y su eco en la literatura contemporánea(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2019) Sánchez-Martínez-de-Pinillos, H. (Hernán)Panoramic and comparative study of the conceptual metaphor of man under siege in Quevedo’s work. The study shows the central andstructuring role of this concept in Quevedo’s thought and poetic imagination, in a triple dimension: ideological and political, natural and cosmic, individual and metaphysical. The study focuses on the moral sonnet «I looked upon my native country’s walls» as representative of this philosophical and poetic worldview. The sonnet is read through its presence in modern and contemporary thought and literature.
- El microcontexto de las galeras en la jácara «Vida y milagros de Montilla» de Quevedo(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2019) Cabanillas-Cárdenas, C.F. (Carlos F.)After reviewing the schematic structure of Francisco de Quevedo’s jácaras, based on a series of microcontexts —composed of external references and above all literary topics—, this article explains the introductory verses of the jacara number 7: «Vida y milagros de Montilla» (Blecua, núm. 855, vv. 1-28). The article is focused on the historical references that appear in the text; then, a new dating is suggested, and new explanations are proposed for some obscure passages related to the punishment of galleys.
- ¿Misoginia o tradición? La mujer en la obra de Francisco de Quevedo(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2019) García-Valdés, C.C. (Celsa Carmen)Quevedo’s personality becomes complicated with legend formed around his baffling personality. One of the leafy branches of this legend is his alleged misogyny, which has become a commonplace in studies of the life and work of the writer. In this article, through the analysis of documentary evidence on the biography of Don Francisco, texts of his works and with the support of some recent publications, the author concludes that scholars must review a concept that owes more to the tradition than Quevedo’s personality.
- Quevedo, Reader of Erasmus(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2019) Kallendorf, H. (Hilaire)The discourse of the pharmakon, or ambiguous antidote, permeates the early modern Spanish dramatic corpus and appears also in prose works by Francisco de Quevedo. One possible intertext for these references might be Erasmus’ Enchiridion. This would be surprising, because Erasmus’ text had been banned by the time Quevedo was writing; but we know he was aware of Erasmus’ work because he used Erasmus’ edition of Seneca, among other connections which have been demonstrated between these two writers. This essay examines patterns of intertextual borrowing, especially Quevedo’s probable (but unacknowledged) debt to Erasmus in several of his works. Even if Quevedo did not absorb Erasmian influence directly, he still could have had access to some of the same ideas through Saint Ignatius and the Jesuits as intermediaries. The last part of the essay looks at the Erasmian legacy in Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises and discusses New Historical self-fashioning as practiced by Quevedo.
- Quevedo, Góngora y la "carne momia"(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2019) de-Lama-de-la-Cruz, V. (Víctor)The use of mummy meat as a therapeutic product was common in the Golden Age. Quevedo shows in his burlesque satirical poems that he knew it well, which allows us to properly interpret several dark passages of his poetry, some of them directed against his greatest adversary, Luis de Góngora.
- El ángel caído en "Política de Dios" y "Sueño del infierno" de Quevedo(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2019) Davenport, R.L. (Randi Lise)This article tries to examine how Quevedo makes use of Lucifer (the devil, or the fallen angel) in his political treatise Política de Dios and in his menippean satire Sueño del infierno in order to criticise the king and his minister (valido) when treating the polemical question of reason of State.
- Las predicaciones de un bufón: «A los pies de la Fortuna», Romance de Quevedo a don Álvaro de Luna(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2019) Roncero-López, V. (Victoriano)The topic of «privanza» was very important in the Spanish Literature of the 17th century. Don Álvaro de Luna represented the rise to power and the tragic fall of the «privados» or favourites. Quevedo wrote a poem around 1627 about the personality of the favourite in which he used his history to warn the Count duke of Olivares on the dangers of power. The buffoon adopts the role of a preacher and becomes the spokesperson of the author to give advice and recriminate the noble for his life. The critical and annotated edition of the «romance» will help us to know better Quevedo’s political and philosophical thought.
