La dramatización de un ars gubernandi: Cómo ha de ser el privado de Francisco de Quevedo
(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2013) Gentilli, L. (Luciana)
The history of the devaluation of Cómo ha de ser el privado, the only Quevedian work written for the theatre that has been integrally transmitted, is based on the reiterated unacknowledgment of his dramatic value. Actually, in this work the theme shapes the action so that the dramatic unity is determined by this first element. From this point of the view the comedy can be read as a dramatized ars gubernandi, a ‘didactic representation’, whose effectiveness largely depends on the transmission of persuasive behaviour patterns, not coercive ones. The monarch’s unavoidable necessity of sharing the responsibility of the government has a close connection with the indispensable limitation of the valido’s role, so that the main argumentation is based on the deminutio of the royal authority. Thanks to the close relation between the fictional elements and their temporal placing, Quevedo was able to make of the comedy an appropriate instrument to dialogue with the monarch, avoiding the impasse of courtly adulation, in order to convey fruitful precepts.
