Building a political image on Instagram: A study of the personal profile of Santiago Abascal (Vox) in 2018
(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2020) Sampietro, A. (Agnese); Sánchez-Castillo, S. (Sebastián)
Due to Instagram’s growing popularity in Spain, politicians have also begun to turn to this social network increasingly more. Accordingly, this paper analyses the visual and textual discourse of 259 posts published throughout 2018 on the personal Instagram profile of Santiago Abascal, the leader of the party Vox. Insofar as he is the Spanish politician with the highest number of followers on Instagram, the aim here is to analyse how he uses this social network in order to identify possible strategies that justify his growing number of followers. In the analysis, special attention was paid to aspects that might have contributed to the (self)presentation of Abascal and the promotion of his party, such as posting personal information and the direct involvement with his followers. The results show that consistent with the use to which Spanish politicians put Instagram, Abascal’s profile highlights his ‘political’ dimension and, specifically, his agenda. Personal content (such as references to leisure or sports) are used strategically to highlight certain features of his persona and ideology. The predominance of unedited images, the framing of the photos and appeals to his followers are some of the clues that reveal that, rather than providing access to his personal life, Abascal’s use of Instagram is the result of a carefully planned promotional strategy.

The political irruption of short video: Is TikTok a new window for Spanish parties?
(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2022) Sánchez-Castillo, S. (Sebastián); Gamir-Ríos, J. (José)
This paper analyses the use of TikTok by the main Spanish parties. The article studies the intensity of use of the short video social network by the accounts of the Partido Popular, Vox, Podemos and Ciudadanos, their narratives and themes, and the views obtained based on them. The research applies a content analysis to the videos published by these groups from account creation until the end of 2020, a period in which the PSOE had no presence. The corpus amounts to 182 units of analysis. The results show that the partisan use of TikTok is still in its infancy and that its intensive use is limited to newly emerging parties, with more favourable results for the most polarised groupings. Moreover, the parties do not adapt to the platform's own narrative codes, without this influencing the impact of their publications; the thematic diversity does have an impact, however. In general, the ideological orientation of the videos is greater than the sectoral orientation, in line with the polarisation in which Western democracies are immersed.

Audiovisual Politeness in TV Political Interviews
    (2018) Sánchez-Castillo, S. (Sebastián)
This study analyses audiovisual politeness in political interviews of the four major candidates for Spanish prime minister in the December 20, 2015 elections, to wit: Mariano Rajoy, Pedro Sánchez, Pablo Iglesias and Albert Rivera. We analyse quantitative data related to specific narrative elements including staging, insertion of audiovisual elements and the building and fracturing of discourse, among other things. In short, we have tried to collect data on the audiovisual discourse structure employed and its impact on the resulting political discourse. The results show that the audiovisual coverage afforded the four candidates by those who control the audiovisual discourse is not homogeneous.

Sindemia o pandemia.
Minority diseases (MS) affect less than 5 cases per 10 000 inhabitants. Generally, their definitive diagnosis takes years to obtain and they show an unfavorable prognosis. The information published on these diseases is essential for their social visibility and for affected people to obtain more resources for basic and clinical research, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. This article has examined the audiovisual information of the Spanish public television TVE from January 1, 2019 to May 9, 2021 on these diseases. Under the framing paradigm, 51 units of analysis have been analyzed. The results show that during the COVID-19 crisis, information on minority diseases has had less echo on Spanish public television and scientific issues have prevailed over those of social denunciation and life stories.
