Las elecciones democráticas a Cortes Constituyentes de 1869
(Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2020) de-la-Fuente-Monge, G. (Gregorio)
The general elections to the Constituent Cortes of January 1869 are the first to be held in Spain by direct universal male suffrage. Using the minutes of the Electoral Boards as a historical source, and with a different methodology from the one used by Martínez Cuadrado, the results are analyzed in all the electoral districts and in the whole of Spain, as well as the political composition of the Cortes exits of the revolution of 1868. These elections were very competitive and registered the greatest participation of the Sexenio Democrático. The Liberal Monarchist coalition, which supported the Serrano-Prim Government, won a very broad victory over the Republicans and the Monarchist-Catholics, promoting as a parliamentary majority the democratic Constitution of 1869. The study of electoral participation and citizen support to the parties is based on homogeneous data. As basic research on the electoral results, it can be used to develop new comparisons and working hypotheses.
