This article intends to contribute to current effort to interpret Adam Smith’s thought in terms that move beyond the traditional reductionism of economic theory by focusing on his theory of language. It shows that his point of departure was ethical, scientifi c, and linguistic scepticism, although it presents this scepticism as a premise that made possible and justifi ed the solution provided by Smith, namely, the centrality of the productive imagination according to scenic, aesthetic, and semiotic procedures.

El presente artículo pretende colaborar con el esfuerzo actual por interpretar el pensamiento de Adam Smith más allá del tradicional reduccionismo de la teoría económica, integrando su teoría del lenguaje en dicho proyecto. Muestra que su punto de partida fue el escepticismo ético, científico y lingüístico, aunque lo presenta como una premisa que posibilitó y justificó la solución aportada por Smith, a saber, la centralidad de la imaginación productiva según procedimientos escénicos, estéticos y semióticos.
