La renuncia de Benedicto XVI al ejercicio del oficio de Obispo de Roma, y como tal, Papa y Sucesor de san Pedro, constituye un hito en la historia de la Iglesia Católica. Con tal motivo se han recordado algunos supuestos precedentes si bien es cierto que tan sólo puede considerarse como tal el de Celestino V, quien además de renunciar reguló canónicamente dicha posibilidad.

Benedict XVI’s resignation to the exercise of the Bishop of Rome’s office represents a landmark in the Catholic Church’s history. On that account, some alleged precedents are remembered, although it remains true that only that of Celestine V –who, besides resigning, canonically regulated the possibility to do so– can be considered as such.
