The resignation of Benedict XVI on health grounds has prompted discussion of the regulation of the conditions and procedures in place should the See of Rome be impeded by papal infirmity. Such regulation is provided for by both the CIC and the CCEO but has not yet been applied. The historical precedents and the sensitive issues that arise in relation to this matter must be addressed.
