Ingreso Mínimo Vital (IMV)

Abstract

This paper focuses on the political discourse regarding the Ingreso Mínimo Vital (IMV) to understand the controversy behind the approval of this policy. In doing so, it tries to make measurable what is typically not: the positions of the different parties in regard with the drafting and implementation of one particular policy. The method proposed allows us to understand in more precise terms the nature of the specific arguments each party uses when discussing the law, as well as to offer a quantitative summary measure of their level of support. The results show an absolute consistency in the pro-IMV narrative by PSOE and Unidas Podemos, while Vox and PP also presented complete consistency towards non-supporting IMV arguments but none of both voted against IMV. On another note, the most active political parties in the debate were PSOE, Unidas Podemos and Vox, while PP -the official party in the opposition- only participated in 6% of the entire debate. Research and practical implications of the findings are discussed.
