Hallamos en Eco y Narciso la coexistencia de dos perspectivas exclusivas sobre la materia mitológica: por un lado, una lectura trágica del mito, que ocupa el primer plano de la escena, caracterizada por la representación conmovedora de los sentimientos y la pintura realista de la psicología de los protagonistas; por el otro lado, la interpretación simbólica —o sea, moral— del mito, contemplado desde una perspectiva trascendental y considerado desde allí como otra comedia humana efímera más dentro del gran teatro del mundo. El resultado de esta lectura doble del mito es una obra teatral intensamente compleja que puede calificarse de ‘ensayo trágico’, pero que medita también profundamente la convergencia cósmica de lo jocoso y lo serio. // Eco y Narciso demonstrates the paradoxical coexistence of mutually exclusive views of its mythological material: on one hand, in the foreground of the scene, as it were, we have a tragic reading of the myth characterized by the moving representation of subjective feeling and a realist depiction of the protagonists’ psychology; on the other hand, employing a transcendental perspective the play launches a symbolic or ‘moral’ reading of the ancient myth, which renders it yet another human comedy on the world’s great stage. The result of this double reading of the Eco and Narcissus myth is an intensely complex play that may be seen as a ‘tragic experiment’, but which, at the same time, meditates the profound cosmic convergence of the jocose and the serious.
