A Systemic Approach to Reframing our Relationship with Materials and to Accelerating the Positive Impact Futurehttps://hdl.handle.net/10171/608162021-06-24T01:05:43Z2020-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Conscious Material Choices. A Systemic Approach to Reframing our Relationship with Materials and to Accelerating the Positive Impact Future
Abstract: We are immersed in a sustainability crisis fueled by our “take-makewaste” industrial model1 and our throwaway culture2. We need an urgent, seismic shift from linear growth to sustainable prosperity. Positive impact can be at the core of new ideas, projects and business models, integrating all aspects of sustainability and creating tangible, long-lasting value. We can move positive impact front and center in our creative conversations with materials. Using systems thinking, material professionals can imagine a ‘new normal’. Leverage points to activate change include a reframed relationship with materials, a new modus operandi and new opportunities leveraging on circularity thinking and technology. Beyond the immediate opportunities that making conscious material choices can unlock in products and buildings, we can radically accelerate the positive impact future.2020-01-01T00:00:00ZCircularidad de los materiales: emulando a la naturalezahttps://hdl.handle.net/10171/608172021-06-24T01:05:44Z2020-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Circularidad de los materiales: emulando a la naturaleza
Abstract: The transition from a linear economy to a circular one brings with it a series of practical challenges for the entire process chain: from the extraction of raw materials, processing, product or services design, manufacturing, usage and end of usage. We may ask ourselves: What are the strategies to comprehend and apply this new paradigm towards a circular economy? This article deals with some aspects within a framework of ideas in this complex circular system to help and guide designers and entrepreneurs to make progress with regard to materials in this paradigm change. How to Squeeze Junk into a Shape and Make it Look Goodhttps://hdl.handle.net/10171/608142021-06-24T07:19:49Z2020-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Quality versus Economy, or How to Squeeze Junk into a Shape and Make it Look Good
Abstract: The steady erosion of the material base of architectural design and construction has been principally caused by economic considerations. As a result, the very moral, intellectual and substantive foundations of architecture have been eroded. This demise parallels developments in other fields of human culture. The cumulative effect of this erosion is the “construction” of thin layers of fiction that consolidate states of false consciousness. Over centuries, architecture has both been coopted and allowed itself to become the servant of collective fictions. With climate change, the next layer of fiction to be superimposed on this cultural veneer is that of “nature”.2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
