Title: Application of Functional Theory of Political Discourse in Chilean presidential debates to determine the influence of journalists in the contents
Abstract: Within the growing academic interest over electoral debates, the role of the journalists who conduct the debates in determining the tenor of the answers has not been sufficiently studied. We used Chile as an extreme case, given the predominant role that the debate moderators receive here, thanks to the “journalistic panel” format utilized in them, where they take turns to interview the candidates. As a framework to describe these contents, we used Functional Theory of Political Discourse by William Benoit. Our data show that, indeed, the candidates use different combinations of said functions, depending on the different frameworks established by the rules for each debate. Clearly, the candidates tend to defend themselves from the attacks of the journalists, rather than their rivals’; and they use other strategies when the rules allow them more freedom.2021-01-01T00:00:00ZThe showrunner’s skills and responsibilities in the creation and production process of fiction series in the contemporary North American television industry

Title: The showrunner’s skills and responsibilities in the creation and production process of fiction series in the contemporary North American television industry
Abstract: Contemporary fiction TV series production in North America is characterized by the showrunner figure’s importance. This paper aims to study the concept of “showrunner” as executive-creative producer, analyze the competencies and responsibilities carried out by them during the production process of TV shows according to personal and professional factors, and examine their position within the current television market. For this purpose, a literature review on fiction TV series production and television authorship has been conducted. After this, adopting the focus of media production studies, a qualitative methodology based on in-depth personal interviews has been used, which was carried out with a selection of thirty-six significant executive producers and writers of contemporary American TV series. The findings indicate the relevance of this profile from a historical perspective, and particularly in recent years. Although there is a basic scheme of tasks developed by the showrunner in each phase of the production process, we find differences in this actuation due to personal –sex and nationality– and professional –format/gender and channel– characteristics in this industrial context. The showrunner develops an executive-creative dual profile to maintain the project’s coherence according to the established vision. Their influence over the TV series’ creative features contributes to reflection on television authorship and its attribution to this figure.2021-01-01T00:00:00ZSpanish companies’ website communication of environmental, social, and governance information

Title: Spanish companies’ website communication of environmental, social, and governance information
Abstract: This study’s goal is to analyze the website communication of environmental, social, and governance –Environmental Social Governance (ESG)– information by companies on the Madrid Stock Exchange. The empirical descriptive and inferential analysis determines IBEX35 companies’ regulatory compliance in disclosure of non-financial information through examination of their website disclosure of ESG information. Economic-financial information from the Iberian Balance Sheet Analysis System (<em>Sistema de Análisis de Balances Ibéricos</em> (SABI)) database was also used to investigate whether the firms that communicate this information better are also more economically efficient. The study results reveal that IBEX35 companies’ website disclosure provides heterogeneous information that is difficult to access and that they need to improve website transparency by communicating sound, sustainable non-financial reports. Further, a significant correlation was found between the companies that disclose the most ESG information and those that have the highest economic profitability –that is, those that are best adapted to the Spanish legal system and compatible with the challenges established by the UN’s Agenda 2030.2021-01-01T00:00:00ZUnderstanding the revolt: «Man the Technician» in global rhetoric

Title: Understanding the revolt: «Man the Technician» in global rhetoric
Abstract: We have used quotations that McLuhan cited from the works of Ortega y Gasset, never been commented, for comparing the concurrence between the analyses of the “revolt of the masses” and “return to the village” in the network. This review discerns how both descriptions converge in a framework that fosters the unlimited expansion of face-to-face relationships which, by encouraging remote adherence to virtual identities, fosters a plethora of communicative practices. Internet encourages persuasive stratagems that foster rhetorical turmoil, which makes it impossible to distinguish sound arguments from those that are fallacious, and credible from false information. “Populism,” “fake news,” and “post-truth” suddenly appeared in everyday language as a sign of this rhetorical transience that fosters the collision of identities in the regressive, technological anchor of “back to the tribes” in the “global village.” Having analysed the concomitance of McLuhan and Ortega from a phenomenological perspective, which has into account emotion in the argumentative process, the conclusions focus on proposals for restoring deliberative norms that have become diluted during modernity and whose meaning endures in normative practices akin to the rhetorical tradition.; Utilizamos citas de McLuhan a Ortega y Gasset, nunca comentadas académicamente, para cotejar en el entramado digital la congruencia entre los diagnósticos de una “rebelión de las masas” y una “vuelta a la aldea”.
