This article offers a tentative analysis of Stoic arguments for the rationality of the cosmos. It divides them into four families and traces their origin to Plato. The main difference between them lies in the fact that they are logically independent from each other. The arguments of the first two families rest on Stoic teleology and embryology, respectively. Those of the other two appeal to ideas about the basic composition of the cosmos and its organic structure. The Platonic precedents are not limited to Plato’s cosmology, but include central notions of his metaphysics as well.es_ES
