Arte nuevo, un rótulo polémico ¿y paradójico?

Abstract

Se analizan el significado y las connotaciones que encierra el título del discurso de Lope de Vega. Para ello se contrasta con el que presentan otros tratados poéticos de la antigüedad y del humanismo renacentista, y se señala la oposición entre el arte y el natural, y entre el arte antiguo y la creación contemporánea. Se dilucidan el valor y los ambiguos matices del concepto de novedad entre los hombres del siglo XVII, y se registra la presencia del sintagma arte nuevo en tratados prácticos del entorno de Lope, y la creciente importancia de esta expresión en la época de los “novatores” y de la Ilustración, excepto en lo que atañe a cuestiones estéticas.

In this paper we analyze the meaning and connotations of the title of Lope de Vega’s discourse. For so doing, we compare it with the one presented in other poetic treatises from the Classical period and Renaissance Humanism, pointing to the contrast between art and nature and between classical art and contemporary creation. We argue the value and the ambiguous nuances of the notion of novelty in the people of the 17th century, and pay attention to the presence of the concept of new art in the practical treatises in the context surrounding the work of Lope de Vega as well as the growing importance of this notion at the time of the “novatores” and the Enlightenment –except from issues related to aesthetic questions.
