Pioneros de la fotografía turística en Navarra: Santa María del Villar y el conde de la Ventosa

Abstract

Diego Quiroga Losada, marqués de Santa María del Villar y José María Álvarez de Toledo son dos fotógrafos vinculados a Navarra a los que une una común afición por un género de fotografía turística, que se encuentra a medio camino entre lo artístico (en el contexto del Pictorialismo)y lo puramente documental, según la tradición de fotografía de viajes decimonónica. Son fotógrafos de tradición regeneracionista, noventayochista, que rompieron tanto con el academicismo fotográfico como con la línea más pintoresca y bucólica del realismo finisecular, y sus prolongaciones noucentistas, sobre todo en Cataluña. Si bien esta estética turística tuvo mucha influencia después, y fue muy explotada en el Franquismo, hay que hacer justicia a los fotógrafos que fueron sus pioneros ya antes de la Guerra Civil española.

Diego Quiroga Losada, marquis of Santa Maria Del Villar and José Maria Alvarez de Toledo are photographers narrowly linked to Navarra (both their archives and the subject of their photography) and they have a common photographic style of touristic photography, which consist of a mix of pictorial and documentary approach. They add to the traditional travelers’ vision the 98-Spanish Generation approaches, which had long influence in Spain, including during Franco’s time, when this esthetic was used for political purposes. Nevertheless, they were pioneers of a Spanish touristic photography which has to be correctly contextualized in the time when it was created, during the first decades of the twenty century, before the Spanish war.
