El humanismo de Bartolomé Jiménez Patón a la luz de nuevos textos

Abstract

Desde hace unos años, se han venido descubriendo algunas obras de Bartolomé Jiménez Patón que se tenían por perdidas o que se desconocían completamente, como ocurre con El virtuoso discreto, primera y segunda parte, donde Patón expone la visión de cómo tiene que ser el humanista cristiano, en la línea de aquellos que le precedieron, particularmente Juan Lorenzo Palmireno. En el artículo se estudia el valor que se otorga en el libro a la cristianización de los clásicos, en tanto que autoridades de la Antigüedad, al servicio de la formación humanística del estudiante; la exposición de algunos textos vinculándolos a la defensa de la fe católica amenazada por las herejías contemporáneas; el trasfondo autobiográfico de algunos de los consejos de la obra y, por último, la visión de la enseñanza que tenía el gramático manchego en su búsqueda de la salvación del cristiano.

For several years now some new works by Bartolomé Jiménez Patón once considered lost, or totally unknown previously, have come to light. Such is the case, for example, with El virtuoso dis- creto, primera y segunda parte, where he displays his vision of how a Christian Humanist should comport himself, along the lines of other similar texts that preceded it, especially that of Juan Lorenzo Palmireno. In this article I study a number of aspects of the text: the value that this book places on Christianizing classical works, in so far as authors from classical Antiquity were utilized in the service of the Humanistic education of the student; the exposition of some texts linked to the defense of the Catholic faith, which was threatened by contemporary heresies; the autiobiographical background of some of the advice given in the book and, finally, the vision of teaching that the grammarian from La Mancha reveals in his search for Christian salvation.
