Un ejemplo de magnificencia: El Palacio Episcopal de Pamplona

Abstract

Tras varios siglos sin residencia propia, el siglo XVIII dotó a los obispos de Pamplona de un palacio episcopal. No fue un hecho aislado sino que debe ponerse en relación con el fervor constructivo que invadió la capital navarra durante aquella centuria, afectando tanto a la arquitectura religiosa como civil. El edificio, construido en torno a un patio central, en piedra y ladrillo, fue levantado a partir de 1734 a instancias del prelado don Melchor Ángel Gutiérrez Vallejo, quien financió las obras gracias a un acuerdo que firmó con el clero navarro y con el cabildo de la catedral de Pamplona. Aunque su fallecimiento paralizó temporalmente el proceso constructivo, su sucesor en la mitra, don Francisco Ignacio Añoa y Busto, pudo concluirlo y ocupar la nueva residencia en 1740.

After several centuries without having their own residence, the bishops of Pamplona were endowed with an Episcopal Palace in the Eighteenth Century. This is not a purely coincidental date but rather we must relate it to the building craze which invaded the capital of Navarra during that century and which affected both religious and civil architecture. The stone and brick Episcopal Palace, built around a central patio, was erected as of 1734 under the auspices of the Bishop Don Melchor Ángel Gutiérrez Vallejo, who financed the project thanks to a signed agreement with the clergy of Navarra and the cathedral chapter of Pamplona. Although the death of the bishop tempo- rarily delayed the building process, his successor, Don Francisco Ignacio Añoa y Busto, was able to complete the building and to occupy the new resi- dence in 1740.
