Abstract
This study researches the idea of absence in the context of the city of Manchester, following the traces left by the buildings that do not exist anymore or have a different function as the one they had in the past. A set of six buildings are analized. They were theaters in Peter Street, one of the most popular streets of the mancunian city, characterized by being centre of leisure and culture activities. Observation, archive consultation and photograph shape the methodology used to study and follow the absence tracks, giving an outlook of how absence and presence can be represented, the visibility and invisibility in the urban context of the buildings that were part of the history of the city. Firstly, the absence concept is addressed from a theoretical level by applying it to the urban context. It will be explained its relationship with the condition of the theatres chosen that occupied a place in Peter Street, and have been key to the development and transformation of the metropolis. Based on this, it will be reflected the significance of architecture and building structures as sourcers and builders of history and memory, being photography the best tool to document their visual weight. It was concluded that although archives can provide a big amount of information about the past life of the buildings, their structures and architecture traces that are in the current city, are the ones that make the absence weaker, giving visibility to what have already gone, contrast that can be perceived through past and present photographs, in this case, of the theatres chosen.
