Le maitre de Rieux et son influence en Navarre

Abstract

Se trata en este trabajo la figura del denominado “maestro de Rieux”, considerado como el escultor más importante del período gótico en Toulouse y el Languedoc. Trabajó entre 1330 y 1350, destacando en su producción un ciclo de estatuas destinadas a la capilla funeraria del obispo Jean Tissandier, en el convento de los Franciscanos de Toulouse, y el sepulcro de Hugo de Castillon en Saint-Bertrand de Comminges. Su influencia en Pamplona fue muy importante, quedando su labor reflejada de un modo especial en la Puerta del Amparo de la catedral, que lleva su huella, aunque las diferencias de estilo son tales que es preciso dejar al maestro de Pamplona toda su originalidad.

This subject of this paper is the artist referred to as the “master of Rieux”, the most renowned sculptor in Toulouse and Languedoc in the Gothic period. At work between 1330 and 1350, his most outstanding productions include the series of statues commissioned for the funeral chapel of Jean Tissandier, the Franciscan convent in Toulouse, and the tomb of Hugo de Castillon in Saint-Bertrand de Comminges. The influence of his work is evident in the architecture of Pamplona, above all in the design of the “Puerta del Amparo” at the Cathedral. While the influence of the “master of Rieux” may be traced therein, there are significant differences in style, suggesting that the originality of the “Puerta del Amparo” be attributed to the “master of Pamplona”.
