"La guerra comienza hoy". La guerra entre España y Estados Unidos en los periódicos finlandeses del año 1898

Abstract

Los tres periódicos mayoritarios finlandeses ofrecieron información y comentarios acerca de la guerra entre España y Estados Unidos. En un primer momento, todos tomaron posición a favor de los americanos; había seculares prejuicios contra España, considerada un país tiránico e intolerante. Durante el transcurso de la guerra, se reconoció el mérito de la defensa española; y con la Paz de París todos los periódicos quedaron desencantados, al advertir que los Estados Unidos habían intervenido por intereses económicos, y no por motivos humanitarios. The three major newspapers of Finland reported and payed attention to the war between Spain and the United States. Initially they gave support to the United States because of the traditional prejudices envisaging Spain as a tyrannical and intolerant country. But as the war went on, the Spanish side and its courage was increasingly appreciated and, eventually, all the Finish newspapers were dissapointed by the economic, non humanitarian reasons of the United States´intervention.
