El discurso académico de John L. Austin: aspectos lingüísticos a la luz de la retórica

Abstract

Este artículo analiza algunos aspectos gramaticales del discurso de John L. Austin en How to Do Things with Words (1962), con la intención de demostrar que las formas discursivas pueden estructurar el paradigma de una teoría lingüística, y no solo representarla. Como marco teórico y metodológico, se aplica el análisis del discurso a la metahistoriografía lingüística. En primer lugar, se refl exiona sobre la naturaleza del discurso académico en las ciencias humanas para comprobar cómo infl uyen en él los modelos de las ciencias experimentales, sobre todo en cuanto a la preeminencia del objetivismo y al rechazo de recursos estilísticos y retóricos. A continuación, el estudio de rasgos morfosintácticos y léxicos en Austin (los verbos, las estructuras interrogativas, los idiomatismos, etc.) permite observar que este fi lósofo del lenguaje reivindica el estilo subjetivo en el discurso académico. De este modo, rompe con el mito objetivista y dota a su obra de una excepcional coherencia entre contenido y forma.

This paper analyses some grammatical aspects of John L. Austin’s discourse in How to Do Things with Words (1962), with the aim to show that discursive forms can structure the paradigm of a linguistic theory, and not just represent it. This study applies Discourse Analysis to Linguistic Metahistoriography as a theoretical and methodological framework. In a fi rst step, some refl ections are made on the nature of academic discourse in human sciences, in order to check how it is infl uenced by the models of experimental sciences, particularly with regard to the preeminence of objetivism and the rejection of stylistic and rhetoric resources. Secondly, the analysis of morphosyntactic and lexical features in Austin (verbs, interrogative sentences, idioms, etc.) allows us to observe that this philosopher of language points out the subjective style in academic discourse. In this way he breaks with the objectivist myth and gives to his work a unique coherence between content and form.
