La Iglesia como sacramentum unitatis en Cipriano de Cartago

Abstract

Dentro de la aplicación del concepto de sacramentalidad a la Iglesia, el Concilio Vaticano II la define como sacramentum unitatis, citando expresamente a Cipriano de Cartago como fuente precisa en el empleo que hace de dicha fórmula. En el presente estudio se analiza dicha expresión tal como ésta aparece en los escritos del Obispo de Cartago, y se estudia el uso que hace de ella nuestro autor para referirse a la unidad eclesial. De esta forma se ponen de manifiesto los rasgos definitorios de la unidad de la Iglesia comprendidos en esta terminología, advirtiendo así la referencia al carácter sagrado e inviolable de esa unidad, es decir, a su origen divino, en cuanto establecida por Dios, revelada en la Escritura, y por ello preceptiva para los fieles.

Within the application of the concept of the sacramental nature of the Church, the Second Vatican Council defines it as sacramentum unitatis, quoting Cyprian of Carthage expressly as a precise source for the use of this formula. In this present study this expression is analysed as it appears in the writings of the Bishop of Carthage, as is the way he uses it to refer to Church unity. Our analysis shows how the definitive characteristics of the unity of the Church are manifested in this terminology, thus emphasising the reference to the sacred and invulnerable character of this unity, that is to say, to its divine origin, in that it is established by God, revelated in Scripture, and therefore essential for the faithful.
