Abstract
This thesis focuses on the development of a methodology for identifying the modal parameters of railway vehicles by employing measurements performed in vehicles under operating conditions. This is a field of great interest because the methods employed to date have important drawbacks from both the technical and economic perspectives. Due to the test conditions and the characteristics of the system, the modal parameters identified with the methods currently employed may differ considerably from the modal parameters that best characterize the behaviour of the vehicle under operating conditions. To overcome these difficulties, the thesis proposes and develops a methodology based on measurements performed on the vehicle under running conditions. In this methodology, the vertical accelerations measured at the axle-boxes are considered as excitations, and the accelerations measured on multiple points of the car body and bogies are considered as responses. The Combined deterministic-stochastic Subspace Identification method (CSI) is employed for identifying the modal parameters. The analysis has focused on the vibration modes associated with the vertical dynamics although the possibility of its extension to the remaining vibration modes has also been investigated. The study includes a preliminary analysis of the peculiarities associated with the railway dynamics regarding the requirements imposed by the application of the CSI method. Moreover, the premises for assuming that the vertical accelerations measured in the axle-boxes reliably represent the vertical excitations received by the vehicle have been studied. The result of this analysis allows to define the data acquisition and analysis conditions. With this objective, employing simplified models, a new coefficient named MPEI (Modal Parameter Estimation Index) has been defined, which allows evaluating in which way the different analysis and vehicle parameters affect the identification accuracy. Furthermore, the excitations due to the passing of each wheelset of the vehicle through the same track irregularities but at different time instants leads to the presence of coincident vectors in the subspaces associated with the future and past excitations. This implies non-compliance of one of the main hypotheses of the CSI method. The analysis performed has proven that the effect of this non-compliance implies the removal of part of the subspace of the free response of the system due to those excitations; however, the part of the subspace due to the rest of the excitations is maintained. This implies that the method is still applicable but with restrictions. The effect of the presence of repeated and delayed excitations has been gathered in a coefficient named RCE (Reduction Coefficient resulting from Excitations), which allows minimizing its influence by selecting the proper analysis conditions. The developed methodology also includes some criteria to distinguish, among all the modes identified, the physical modes from the mathematical modes. In addition, some estimators of the identification error have been defined. The estimators vary depending on whether theoretical models or experimental data is being analysed. For experimental data, the defined estimator is based on the capacity of the identified system to reproduce the measured response.Further, the selection of the algorithm for the analysis has been investigated. Different algorithms developed for the application of the CSI method have been analysed, including a self-developed algorithm. These algorithms have been compared using the results obtained with models of different complexity levels and based on this analysis, the PO-MOESP algorithm (Past-Outputs Multivariable Output-Error State sPace) has been selected. The application of the CSI method to a three-dimensional model that considers the dynamics associated with the wheel-rail contact has allowed analysing the influence of certain factors that cannot be treated with more simplified models. This model has been employed to define the last aspects of the proposed methodology. To conclude the investigation, the defined test and analysis methodology has been applied to a high-speed train. The modal parameters of the vehicle have been identified using measurements performed with the vehicle running at different speeds. The modes associated with the vertical dynamics, which are the objective of the thesis, have been correctly identified. Moreover, promising results have been obtained for the identification of the structural modes and the modes associated with the lateral dynamics. The validity of the obtained results has been evaluated based on the repeatability of the results, the error estimators defined and the comparison with the results of a mathematical model of the tested vehicle.
