De ensanche militar a “city” de Pamplona : arquitectura y urbanismo para una nueva imagen de la ciudad

Abstract

El derribo, a comienzos de la década de 1970, de los cuarteles e instalaciones militares construidos a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX en los terrenos del Primer Ensanche destinados a tal fin, dará paso a una nueva realidad urbana de Pamplona. En torno al gran vial de la avenida del Ejército se articuló el denominado Plan Parcial del Centro Comercial de la Avenida del Ejército, del que formaban parte un conjunto de edificios que configuraban la “city” pamplonesa, dado que su construcción no sólo dotaba de una nueva y moderna imagen a la ciudad, sino que suponía un desplazamiento de la actividad social, comercial y cultural a este sector de la ciudad. Aunque el desarrollo del Plan Parcial tal y como estaba concebido originariamente resultó inviable, y no todos los elementos que lo integraban se hicieron realidad de forma inmediata, contribuyó de manera determinante a definir la Pamplona del siglo XXI.

From Military Enlargement to “City” of Pamplona: architecture and urbanism for a new image of the town The demolition, at the beginning of the 1970’s, of the barracks and military installations built in the end of 19th Century and at the beginning of 20th Century in the plots of the First Enlargement assigned to this purpose, will lead to a new urban reality of Pamplona. The named “Plan Plarcial del Centro Comercial de la Avenida del Ejército” was articulated around the big road of “Avenida del Ejército”. In this plan were included a collection of buildings that formed the “City” of Pamplona, because their construction not only would give a new and modern image to the town, but it would mean a move - ment of social, commercial and cultural activity to this area of the town. Although the development of the “Plan Parcial” such as it was originally conceived was infeasible, and not all the elements that integrated it were accomplished at once, it contributed in a determinant way to define the Pamplona of the 21th Century.
