La encíclica "Sacerdotalis caelibatus", cincuenta años después

Abstract

Blessed Paul VI’s great encyclical <i>Sacerdotalis caelibatus</i> (24-VI-1967) celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. This article attempts to analyze the text. It considers, first of all, the doctrinal foundations of the ministerial celibacy (its profound theological roots) as they are proposed by the encyclical. Subsequently, the article covers two pastoral aspects, namely, a) the need to impart an adequate formation, in which both the gift of ministerial celibacy and the permanent commitment assumed upon its reception could have an assured place, to candidates for the priesthood; and b) the inseparability between the priest’s chaste life, willingly and wholly offered at the service of God and of the salvation of the mankind, and works of charity.

La gran encíclica del beato Pablo VI <i>Sacerdotalis caelibatus</i> (24-VI-1967), cumple cincuenta años. Esta Nota quiere ser una relectura analítica del texto. Se toman en consideración, en primer lugar, los fundamentos doctrinales del celibato ministerial (sus raíces teológicas profundas), tal como la encíclica los propone. A continuación se presta atención a dos de los aspectos pastorales: a) la necesidad de proporcionar a los candidatos al sacerdocio una formación adecuada, en la que hallen suelo y acomodo seguros tanto el don del celibato ministerial como el compromiso permanente asumido al aceptarlo; y b) la inseparabilidad entre la vida casta del sacerdote, voluntaria y plenamente entregada en el celibato al servicio de Dios y de la salvación de los hombres, y la práctica generosa de la caridad.
